Consumer Packaged Goods

Thirty-four percent of global greenhouse gas emissions come from food systems1. Coupled with the ever-growing food demand, food producers are under pressure to keep up while reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. Today, Industry-leading Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) organizations are progressing their sustainability goals to advance towards net-zero operations.

The Opportunity

Serving more people while generating fewer greenhouse gas emissions is possible thanks to innovative technology that supports smarter CPG operations and more efficient supply chains, from rapid decarbonization to EV transitions and beyond. Energy as a Service (EaaS) microgrids help organizations increase energy capacity quickly and sustainably, without waiting for the grid to catch up.

The Challenge

Many CPG organizations need to increase energy capacity quickly and sustainably, but they rely on utility grids that are not always equipped to support decarbonization or fleet electrification. Energy-intensive CPG organizations must think outside the grid, leveraging tailored energy infrastructure solutions to decarbonize and electrify for more efficient operations.

The CPG energy transformation is important considering the following:

60
%
increase in global food demand
forecasted in the next three decades, increasing by up to 56 percent by 20501
by 2050
of global health sector emissions are from the U.S.
The CPG industry must reduce its GHG emissions by more than half to meet 2050 climate targets2

Deploying microgrids is a key resilience objective for the DoD. Existing EUL and PPA procurement authorities for microgrids can be combined into an Energy as a Service procurement model. The EaaS model draws from the EUL’s authority to execute land leases for the siting of energy infrastructure (microgrids) on DoD installations. It also draws from the PPA’s authority that enables a energy developer to contract with a DoD agency by selling energy in exchange for its services in financing, designing, building, owning, operating, and maintaining energy infrastructure.
